French society confronts deadly religious tensions; France and Germany announce new lockdowns; China and US engage in crisis communication

Three people were killed in a knife attack in the southern French coastal city of Nice, France. And, France and Germany have both announced national lockdowns again, declaring that the coronavirus is out of control. Also, China’s Defense Ministry has said that Chinese and US military chiefs held video meetings this week about crisis communication.

Russia, France, US demand ceasefire to fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh; Cyprus is blocking EU sanctions on Belarus; Arrests in Hong Kong

The US, Russia and France are jointly demanding an immediate ceasefire and return to negotiations without delay in the breakaway Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh. And, Cyprus is blocking EU economic on Belarus, demanding that Brussels also punish Turkey for its oil and gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean. Also, police in Hong Kong have arrested at least 60 people for protesting on China’s National Day.

Mourning and anger amid devastation after Beirut explosion; One-third of Afghanistan may have had COVID-19; 75-years since Hiroshima bombing

Many Lebanese are turning toward anger and frustration over corrupt Lebanese officials for the presence of a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate at the center of a massive explosion. And, in Afghanistan, the country’s health minister said an antibody survey revealed almost one-third of the nation may have been infected with the coronavirus. Also, with Hiroshima marking the 75th anniversary of the 1945 nuclear blast on Thursday, the survivors were a diminished presence due to the threat of the coronavirus and their old age.
