Locals put up signs throughout Lampedusa to protest politicians who came after the shipwreck. More than 350 people — mostly from the African nation of Eritrea — lost their lives. Many Lampedusans protested the lack of resources and support from the Italian state to deal with the immediate needs of survivors and the families of the victims.
