Environmentalists worry demand for wood pellets is creating a new market for trees that would otherwise be left standing, and continue performing important ecological services like holding carbon, filtering water and air and providing wildlife habitat. The Dogwood Alliance says old-growth hardwood trees in this lowland wetland forests in Greensville County, Virginia were recently cut for biomass.
