Ever since winning a sixth term in an election that the White House and most Western countries deemed as a sham, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has been brutally cracking down on opposition both at home and abroad. In July, an opposition journalist was abducted after the commercial flight he was on was forced down over Belarusian airspace. That plane was heading to neighboring Lithuania, which has become a hub for Belarusian dissidents. Many have been given humanitarian protection, but as Andrew Connelly reports from the capital Vilnius, this doesn’t necessarily guarantee peace of mind.
