Who are the Taliban, sociologically speaking?

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, there’s been a lot of worry about what they will do, how they will rule and what it means for Afghan women. But a more fundamental question is this: Who are they this time around? What is the background, education, and cultural roots and priorities of those who support them?
