Tim Fontaine spent 20 years as a journalist covering Canadian politics and Indigenous affairs for the CBC and Aboriginal People’s Network. Burned out, he quit. Fontaine, a member of the Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba, had always been interested in comedy. So, he started tweeting jokes and fake headlines that expressed what he couldn’t say as a journalist. Thus was born The Walking Eagle News, a kind of Onion from an Indigenous point of view. And like The Onion, many people believed the fake stories. Marco Werman speaks with Fontaine about his satire.
