Why did the US change its stance on Nord Stream 2?

Nord Stream 2 is a massive offshore pipeline that’s been in the works since 2011. The goal is to transport natural gas directly from Russia to Germany. For years, the US, Ukraine and other European countries have opposed the project. Now, however, the US has changed its tune. Following a new deal with Germany, Washington has effectively dropped its opposition to the completion of the pipeline.
