Failed leadership means surging infections in Brazil 

In Brazil, where daily deaths are surpassing the rest of the world, hospitals are on the brink of collapse. Marcia Castro, a Brazilian demographer and chair of the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard University, tells The World it didn’t have to be this way. Brazil was ready for outbreaks. Failed leadership and a government that has promoted misinformation, she says, is to blame for the uncontrolled surge.
