Controversial face-covering ban passes in Switzerland 

A controversial referendum in Switzerland banning face coverings, including the burqa and niqab worn by some Muslim women, passed earlier this week by a razor-thin margin. It’s an example of how Switzerland’s tradition of direct democracy and referenda, while designed as a protection for minorities, in this instance did the opposite.
