Ella Kissi-Debrah and her family lived on one of London’s busiest, most toxic roadways. Severe bouts of coughing sent Kissi-Debrah routinely to the hospital several years ago. After dozens of trips to the emergency room, Ella died in 2013 when she was just nine years old. On Wednesday, in a landmark case, a coroner ruled that Kissi-Debrah’s death was caused by acute respiratory failure, severe asthma and air pollution exposure.
