Saturday marks the five-year anniversary of the landmark Paris climate accord. The global process to cut greenhouse gas emissions has been relatively effective in getting countries to promise to cut carbon emissions. According to new data released Wednesday from the United Nations, the target of limiting warming to 2 degrees Celsius is within reach, largely due to a slew of new 2050 net-zero emissions targets put forth by large emitters over the past several months. But in order for those promises to mean much, countries need to also establish nearer-term targets that can be monitored by the international community. Dozens of these new, short-term plans are expected to be announced at a virtual climate summit on Saturday. The World’s environment correspondent Carolyn Beeler reports.
