Voters in the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have voted out a president who favored reuniting the ethnically divided island. Ersin Tartar, a right-wing nationalist who was backed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, won Sunday’s runoff against incumbent Mustafa Akinci, a pro-reunification moderate. The World’s Lydia Emmanouilidou tells host Marco Werman what the election means for reunification efforts and the regional conflict that has erupted over drilling rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
