Ex-US Marine Paul Whelan was sentenced by a Russian court to 16 years in jail on spying charges. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Ambassador to Moscow, John Sullivan, called the verdict a violation of human rights that would damage ties between the US and Russia.
