For years, Rami has sacrificed celebrating Ramadan with his family in the pursuit of practicing medicine. He left home in Syria for medical school and residency, then fled to the US when it became too hard to work under the Assad regime. For seven years, he’s celebrated Ramadan alone, without his wife, because she couldn’t get a visa to come to the US. This year, he’s often late to break the fast because he’s busy treating COVID-19 patients in New York — but he finally gets to celebrate with his wife, who’s recently been allowed to move to the US.
