‘American Dirt’

A new novel about the migrant experience was met with controversy as soon as it hit bookstores this week. “American Dirt” is a fictional story about a Mexican woman fleeing cartel violence, and some writers of Latin American backgrounds have found its depiction of Mexico and of Mexican migrants deeply troubling. Even more, they're troubled by how the novel — which was written by an American writer from New York City and garnered a seven-figure contract — highlights the lack of diversity in the book publishing industry.
