Downtown Beirut has been the scene of protests over the past few weeks. That area of the city has been rebuilt since the 1990s. Modern shopping malls have replaced what was once a thriving residential neighborhood. The protesters have occupied two abandoned places in the old downtown — a theater and a cinema.
