Merkel and Macron’s moment

The World

Among several remarkable World War I commemorations over the weekend in Europe, a meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron stood out. The two world leaders met at the Clairiere de l’Armistice in Compiegne, France. It’s the spot where Germany signed the armistice that ended World War I in 1918 and also where France was forced by Germany’s Adolf Hitler to sign a surrender in 1940. Merkel and Macron appeared to be visibly moved after unveiling a plaque commemorating the armistice.
