No regrets: East Germans recall attempts to escape Communist state

Nov. 9, 2019 marks the 30th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Those who tried to escape East Germany for the freedoms of the West used all sorts of methods — some swam, some biked, some tunneled — and many were caught and jailed. But, now, 30 years later, they say they don't regret their efforts.

The area has been recognized by the American NGO Cultural Vistas for its success in integrating newcomers. Yet, some people here are uneasy with their new neighbors. They say migrants bring crime and have harassed women on the street.
