Today's Geo Quiz takes us to the other side of the world.
There's a childhood belief that if you dig a hole, a very deep hole, eventually you will come out on the other side of the planet. That's one way of thinking about antipodes. Antipodes are direct opposites: two places on the Earth that are diametrically opposite one another.
For example, Bogotá and Jakarta are antipodes.
So are Svalbard, Norway and McMurdo Sound in Antarctica...ditto Timbuktu and Fiji. Noon in one place is midnight in the other.
So here's the quiz: Name the place that's on the other side of the world from Hawaii.
There are no surf boards, no pineapples, not even any volcanoes to mark this spot. It's a parched, sandy place in southern Africa whose name means "the great thirst".
So name Hawaii's antipode if you can...
Antipodes
1. Any two places or regions on diametrically opposite sides of the Earth; "the North Pole and the South Pole are antipodes"
2. Those who live on the side of the globe diametrically opposite.
3. Anything exactly opposite or contrary.
