For today's Geo Quiz we're looking for a Brazilian city in the middle of the rainforest. Its beginnings were modest. This is how a German engineer described it in 1867.
"An insignificant little town of about 3,000 inhabitants, with unpaved and badly leveled streets, and low houses and cottages of the most primitive construction without any attempt at architectual beauty."
It didn't stay that way. 10 years later, 50,000 people were living there.

Today, this Brazilian city has a population of almost 2 million. And that German engineer would be happy to note that it now has at least one landmark of architectural beauty.
