We're tracking some climate change research for today's Geo Quiz. Australian and American scientists set off tomorrow on an expedition in the Southern Ocean.
Southen Surveyor
|
They'll be aboard a Tasmanian marine research ship called the Southern Surveyor. We're looking for the name of the vessel's home port. It sets sail from the capital city of the Australian state of Tasmania.
The team will conduct research on the effects of climate change on deep sea corals. The corals lie 1 and half miles down so the crew will use an unmanned submersible. Sea corals have rings similar to trees...they record age and changes in ocean chemistry.
The US - Australian team hopes the deep sea corals will reveal something about changes in ocean temperatures over the next decades and even centuries. So picture the Southern Surveyor and its crew shoving off from a city whose skyline is dominated by Mt Wellington.
