Today's Geo Quiz is a preview of tomorrow's winter solstice. We're searching for an ancient monument in Ireland. And we asked a local for directions:
"It is located within a bend of the river Boyne and Country Mead, its about 8km from the town of Drogheda, and its about 6km from the village Slane, so its on the north of the Boyne, just outside Drogheda ... on the east coast of Ireland."
It is a sacred site that's often compared to Stonehenge, in England. But this stone and earthen tomb was built around 3200 B.C. That's a thousand years before Stonehenge. The Irish monument we're talking about is most famous for its midwinter spectacle.
During the Winter Solstice, sunlight streams through the roof of this tomb.It travels down a long passageway, and illuminates an inner chamber. Clear skies are expected tomorrow, so those who travel to this ancient Irish monument have a chance to see the solstice spectacle in all its glory.
Millions more people could be watching too. We'll explain how... when we illuminate the answer here...
