Since then, the city's landscape has changed quite a bit.
But the capital doesn't altogether reject its Soviet past.
Boston Globe correspondent Tom Haines is there right now.
"I'm standing off the a very broad boulevard that runs through the center of this capital city. It is at one end today stands a Porsche dealership and near another a statute of Vladimir Lenin. It's renowned for its neo-Stalinistic architecture which is hopeful to become a UNESCO world heritage site."
