For today's Geo Quiz we're looking for a city at the edge of the Sahara Desert.

This city is in Mali. It's a dusty desert capital near the Niger River. Back in the 12 & 13th centuries, this African city was buzzing with merchants trading in salt, gold, ivory and slaves.
Marq de Villiers has written about this city...Marq, give us a snapshot of what this city was like when it was a major African trade hub?
de Villiers: "These merchants were coming in from all over the Middle East and north Africa, they were coming in camel caravans across the desert and these were not just half a dozen or 200 camels, sometimes 10,15 thousand camels would come into town at a time swelling the population of the town. The warehouses were filled with precious things like gold, vessels of gold, rubies, jewelry, fine furs, imported clothing, and manuscripts from all over the Islamic world."

OK we'll leave you with one last clue. Listen up! The music we play during our Geo Quiz is by one of this city's most famous musicians.
