For our Geo Quiz today we're looking for a country that joined the European Union in 2004.

Over millennia, this island in the Mediterranean was ruled by the Romans, the Macedonians, the Byzantines, the Persians, the Venetian and the Ottomans to name just some of its conquerors.

It is also a former British Colony, which gained independence in 1960. A war in 1974 left this country divided by a UN buffer zone which cuts through the capital city today.

This nation is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite.

Still need a clue?

This country is known for a epicurean delight: a cheese, made from sheep and goat milk--which doesn't melt when grilled due to it's high melting point. This cheese known as Haloumi or Hellim, in the two languages of the island, is often served with watermelon.
