Iraqi oranges and pomegranates figure in today's Geo Quiz.
We're looking for the name of one of Iraq's provinces (governorates) today. The province is in the northeast and was once a way station on the medieval Silk Road. Traders travelling from Baghdad to points throughout the Persian empire... and even to China... passed this way. This agricultural province borders Iran. Its capital is Baqubah.
It's sometimes referred to as the "orange capital of Iraq". One U-S reporter who flew over the region in a helicopter says it's a sight to see:
"It was a helicopter that the Iraqis had adapted for crop spraying, and my cameraman and I stuffed ourselves into it because it was really tiny, but it was absolutely extraordinary flying just above the tips of those orange groves."
So name this agricultural province whose capital is just 30 miles northeast of Baghdad!
