Soccer's your first clue for today's Geo Quiz.
The starting point for our quiz is the country that was chosen to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup: South Africa.
We're looking for a South African island known locally as Makana. Makana was a 19th century warrior leader from the eastern part of South Africa. The British banished Makana to this island in 1819, where he died trying to escape.
In later years, the rocky island served as a penal colony. Anti-apartheid activists were imprisoned there. Some perished. Others survived.
Nelson Mandela spent nearly 3 decades on this island prison. For 30 years, some of the prisoners also played soccer on this island to entertain themselves.
We'll say more about this little known chapter of sports history, but first, name the island where Nelson Mandela was held.
