Arctic waters

December 7, 2006 | permalink |

Today's Geo Quiz had us exploring one section of the Arctic Ocean. We wanted to know the name of the sea just north of the Norway-Russia border. It's a cold and mostly dark environment right now. That's according to science journalist Dan Grossman.

Grossman is in an excellent position to answer today's quiz. He's aboard a Norwegian research vessel just off the coast of Svalbard at 79 degrees north 15 degrees east, about 800 miles south of the North Pole in the Barents Sea.

You can hear our interview about the Barents Sea

and see some of Grossman's photographs here

The Northern Lights: The Northern Lights, visible faintly in the sky as the ship approaches the Svalbard archipelago. Despite total darkness the entire cruise, this was the only sighting of the Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights: The Northern Lights, visible faintly in the sky as the ship approaches the Svalbard archipelago.
