The name Per Gessle may not sound familiar. But you may be familiar with some of his music. This 47-year-old Swede is part of the pop-rock duo, Roxette.

Roxette had four number 1 hits in the U.S. It's sold more records than any other Swedish band besides ABBA. The World's Gerry Hadden has more on Per Gessle's latest venture.

Roxette has sold 70 million albums since their glam-rock hit, The Look, in 1989. Now, Gessle has just recorded an album on his own. The double CD is a departure from its Roxette's fluffy MTV image. Gessle sets out to capture the spirit of growing up in 1970's Sweden. You get the sense that it was a carefree time. One of the collection's first songs, called "I have a Party in My Head."

Gessle embarked on this project 2 years ago after his Roxette partner Marie Fredrikkson was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She's since recovered. Gessle turned to another Swede to sing on his latest album. Here's Helen Josephson opening this mellow track, called Hey Mr DJ.

By the time Gessle joins in you have been dropped squarely in 70s territory, sailing along somewhere between Seals and Croft's 'Summer Breeze' and Harry Nilsson's 'Everybody's Talkin,' from the film "Midnight Cowboy."

The album is called “Son of a plumber”. That's also the pseudonym Gessle adopted for the project. He says in order to start anew after so many records, he wanted to shed his real name. and in fact, he is the son of a plumber. the record is derivative, but it maintains a kid-like and un-ironic tone - as in this tune "Are You an Old Hippie, Sir?"

Gessle has had two parallel careers - one on the international stage, the other in Sweden. He's been huge at home since the early 80's. But it took teaming up with Fredrikkson as Roxette to gain recognition the world-wide.

This record may not make Per Gessle a household name internationally. But anyone who grew up in the 1970's will find something in his songs to awaken old memories.

For The World I'm Gerry Hadden.
