South African city

December 31, 2008 | permalink |

South Africa is our destination for today's Geo Quiz. We're looking for a city that was once a way-station for the Dutch East India Company. Its ships stopped here on their way to and from Southeast Asia. The Dutch brought more than Asian goods to these shores.

They brought slaves -- and slave culture gave rise to a New Year's tradition that lives on in the city to this day. It involves wandering minstrels in colorful costumes. So -- which South African city starts the New Year with minstrel music?
