Finland's home of the fiddle

October 16, 2008 | permalink |

Our Geo Quiz today takes us to Finland. We're looking for a municipality in western Finland -- to be precise -- along the Perho River.

This small cluster of towns hosts one of the world's largest folk music festivals. About 100,000 people come for this summer festival.

Compare that to the year-round population of just over 4,000. This part of Finland is known for its fiddles -- and its fiddlers. In fact, musician Antii Jarvela jokes that if you're from this area you were born with a fiddle in your hand.

Jarvela is a member of the band Frigg. We'll hear their music in today's Global Hit.

And we'll name Finland's home of the fiddle here ...
