The oud is an Arab lute. It's a precursor to the guitar. This oud trio is made up of three Palestinian brothers. They call themselves, Le Trio Joubran. The brothers were born in the city of Nazareth.
The eldest is 32 year-old Samir. He's the group's composer. Samir says it's difficult to categorize the music he and his brothers play.
But he says he was inspired by the trio of guitar greats, Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola. So much so, that he wanted to try something like that on the oud. This is from Le Trio Joubran's new CD, "Randana."
Samir Joubran says the trio incorporates styles from all over the world. Samir started out playing solo, but in 2002 he teamed up with his younger brother, Wissam.
And 2 years later added their youngest brother. Wissam is known for his skill as an improviser. He is also an oud maker. Wissam was the first Arab graduate of the Stradivarius Institute in Italy, where he specialized in oud and violin making.
Building instruments is a Joubran family tradition. The Joubrans' father is an oud maker and so was their grandfather. This CD features the brothers playing instruments Wissam made.
Le Trio Joubran is developing an international following. The brothers are well known in Paris, where they're based. They toured the US in April.
And next month, the brothers will perform 6 concerts at the UK Festival of Muslim Culture.
