For many, the name of this southern European city along the Miljacka River conjures up a city under fire.
During the Bosnian war, it underwent one of the longest sieges in modern military history. For nearly 4 years Serb forces and snipers surrounded and shelled the city. But more than a decade has passed since those dark days.
The Dayton Agreement signed in 1995 is a thing of the past. Today the city is recovering.
It once again is a center of culture and economic development in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Half a million residents live and work in this city surrounded by the Dinaric Alps.

The city's trolleys and trams are running on schedule, just as they did in 1885 when the city became the first in Europe to have electric trams.
Sarajevo was the first city in Europe to have a full-time (from dawn to dusk) operational electric tram line. Since then it has upgraded to more modern trams.
