We were searching for the name of an island nation in the Indian Ocean.

The country's president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was visiting one of the northern islands yesterday. He was greeting a crowd of well-wishers, including a group of local boy scouts.

Then an assailant tried to attack him with a knife.

“I was actually probably about 15-20 feet from the president when the incident happened.”

That's presidential aide Mohamed Shareef.

“The assailant was standing in the line 1 foot behind the Boy Scout essentially 8 inch knife and he attempted to stab the president luckily he saw it coming, he tried to push the boy scout to one side to make room for the assault the assailant injured the boys hand quite severely.”

Security officers then stepped in and hustled the president away. But Shareef says it was an extremely close call.

He credits the Boy Scout with saving the president's life. The teenager was flown to the capital Male for treatment. Hundreds of locals turned out to thank him.

“The Boy Scout was actually wearing his full uniform and it was absolutely drenched in blood lot of pain he's ok. In a couple day he will be fit as a fiddle.”
