We have TWO Global Hits for you today -- Both include, rather UNUSUAL religious or holiday music.
First, the religious.
The late pope John Paul the Second is featured in a multi-media DVD of Trip Hop or trance music...a genre associated more with raves than with reverence.
The Vatican has released the DVD to influence the campaign to raise John Paul to sainthood.
The World's Gerry Hadden has more on the music that implies a whole different sort of ecstasy.
Even in his wildest flights of fancy Pope John Paul II surely never imagined praying in time to a beat like this.
But that's the late Pope all right. The song is called Christ the Savior and its featured on a new DVD called Santo Subito. In English that translates roughly as Sainthood Quickly.
The Vatican is behind the project. It seems in this age of instant gratification even the Cardinals have grown impatient with sainthood's slow pace. But more surprising is the guy the Vatican commissioned to write this music...a composer who made his name scoring gory slasher movies with titles like Graveyard Disturbance, Soundstage Massacre and Tripping the Dark Fantastic.
Meet British composer Simon Boswell. By a chance of fate Boswell began his career scoring for Italian films. His says his Italian connections landed him the Santo Subito gig...even though he's an agnostic.
BOSWELL: "I think they took the material view that music is its own spiritual language which transcends religion. And I think they wanted me to do justice to John Paul's life in a more emotional and personal way then in a kind of theological agreement with them."
The Vatican gave Boswell free rein to compose as he saw fit. He was even allowed to tinker with John Paul's cadence and pitch to make him match the music. Boswell says he went too far just once...with the prayer, Pater Noster, Our Father.
BOSWELL: "I probably in my nervousness got a little carried away with that. They sent it back saying Simon we love this but you can't change the tune of the pater nostra. Its 2000 years old."
Not being religious, Boswell says he never paid too much attention to the Pope's message. But while working on this project he became moved and mesmerized. Still he says he hasn't run off to get baptized just yet.
BOSWELL: "No, no, not at all. But I think, you don't have to be a Catholic to appreciate it. I think a lot of the things he said I heard John Lennon say 30 years ago. He was constantly saying no more war. He's always saying let's just love each other. You know, what you need is love."
Pope John Paul II had detractors, even among Catholics. Women's groups attacked him over his stance on abortions and women priests. Safe sex advocates criticized him for condemning the use of condoms. But Boswell's convinced that Santo Subito will sell well. He figures if just five percent of the world's Catholics buy the DVD it will easily outsell mega hits like Michael Jackson's Thriller.
For The World I'm Gerry Hadden.

Well you don't have to be Catholic to appreciate Santo Subito. And you don't have to be a weirdo to appreciate what we're about to hear.
