Yemenite Jewish community

December 19, 2007 | permalink |

We're heading for the Middle East in today's Geo Quiz. We're looking for a town just outside Tel Aviv, in Israel.

This town is home to thousands of Yemenite Jews. They settled there in the late 1940's. It's a unique community now -- especially when it comes to its food.

Slow-cooked bread, fragrant spices and hot garlic sauce are all on the menu. It's a traditional sort of place -- according to writer Adeena Sussman.

“You still see women walking around in traditional head scarves, and if you look closely sometimes you can find women cooking bread in taboon-type ovens in their back yards. In one of the little sort of a strip mall, there's a man who sells Yemenite spices and zabeeba, which are these wonderful dried raisins.”

Sussman went to this town near Tel Aviv to check out the local cuisine.
