We're tracking the USS Kitty Hawk for today's Geo Quiz.
USS Kitty Hawk
The 46 year old USS Kitty Hawk is usually based in the Japanese port city of Yokosuka.
It's the only U.S. aircraft carrier permanently deployed overseas. Thanksgiving Day plans went astray for the American sailors aboard the ship. The Kitty Hawk and its support ships have some eight thousand U.S. servicemen and women aboard. They were all sailing to Hong Kong to join hundreds of families that had flown in for Thanksgiving. Turkey dinners, lots of them, were planned. But China had refused the ships' entry to the port.
Today China changed its mind, and gave the go ahead. But it was too late. The USS Kitty Hawk was already sailing back to its base in Japan. So can you name the body of water off the coast of Hong Kong that the ship crosses as it makes its way back to its home port?
