Let's get back to that South Pacific island we were looking for in today's Geo Quiz.

It's culturally linked to New Zealand, but it's a territory of the the US. It's also a place that fascinates radio ham operators...as The World's David Leveille explains:

First let's get the geography out of the way. The answer to the Geo Quiz is Swains Island.

It's a miniscule coral atoll with, at last count, 15 residents, some Tokelau style houses, a town hall, a schoolhouse, and lots of mosquitos. One thing sets Swain's Island apart from any other remote Pacific coral atoll: It's said to be the last place on Earth to make radio contact with the rest of the world. It's a distinction that means something to ham radio operators like Bill Moore.

"DXCC, Bill Moore"

Bill Moore runs the DXCC. DX stands for distant communications. CC is short for Century Club. It's based at the American Radio Relay League Newington, Connecticut.

The DXCC is an elite group of ham radio operators who've made 2-way radio contact with more than 100 places in the world. Their mission is to make radio contact with as many places as possible. Moore uses his handle NC1L -- when he calls outs on the shortwave:

"CQ CQ DX, CQ CQ DX this is November Charlie One Lima calling CQ DX and standing by for a call."

Translation: I'm on the airwaves, I'm listening, talk to me. It's a form of long distance communication goes back to the days of Morse Code, and that's been eclipsed by email and Internet chat rooms...but it's still popular with ham radio enthusiasts who love to send and receive radio signals from far-flung places. The DXCC publishes a list of geographic entities in the world...to encourage hams to try and make contact with.

"Currently on our list, reading down, Spratley Islands, Malta, Mauritius, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Fiji, Swaziland... "

It's along list. It includes all 192 UN member states plus many territories. Number 337, the most recent addition on that list is...you guessed it Swains Island.

"Swains Island was added to the list as the last entity, it is Number #337 on the list."

It was added a year ago. And predictably, radio Dx'ers raced to make 2-way radio contact with operators on the island:

" So what happens when a new country comes on, there's a mad rush on the air, it's pandemonium for all the hams to work that final country, to get back into the top of the honor roll."

6 days later contact was made. And so Swains Island became the last place on the planet to have made radio contact with the rest of the world. The question is: what's going to be Number # 338 on the list?

"Good question as I tell many hams ...basically we just have to wait and see."

Moore says he's busy trying to get through the long list. He's been busy attempting to contact someone in North Korea.

"We're being that there's 337 and I'm only at 225 I've got a lot to work."

The list could change at any point. Montenegro was added in 2006. It's a pretty good guess that Kosovo, if it achieves political independence will be added to the DXCC list. But for now, Swains Island has the distinction of being the last added. Its considered a feather in the cap for any ham operator who makes contact.
