Finally, our Global Hit today features a type of music called "folk metal." Believe it or not there is a genre that combines folk music and heavy metal. The idea is said to have originated in Scandinavia.
Norwegian musician and journalist Lars Nedland says it began when local heavy metal musicians took an interest in their cultural past.
NEDLAND: "They look back to the Pagan times, to the times of the old Norse gods. And in this cultural search for themselves they also found the basic music that was in our countries in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in pre-Christain times. And that's how this fascination for folk music came into the minds of the heavy metal people. And it developed from there.
A good example is a Norwegian band called Lumsk. They released an album called "Asmund Fregdegjaevar." It starts off with traditional Norwegian fiddle playing and then a guitar kicks in making it very heavy, but still very folky.
They're singing about an old Norwegian tale. A lot of these bands search the history of tales and they use this either as inspiration or they just use these particular tales for lyrics when they make music.
What I like about this is it spreads to the rest of the world. You get a lot of bands around the globe using the heavy metal framework and the basic folk music of their own area. That's how you get Vedic Metal in Singapore and India, you get Celtic Metal in Ireland. You get bands all over the globe searching their own cultural history, their own musical history."
