Billboard magazine music critic Anastasia Tsioulcas tells us more about the gypsy band -- called "Taraf De Haidouks".

Over the past 15 years or so they have become a huge force in world music. And this album is something all together different. It's called Maskarada and it plays with the idea of identity - wearing masks. The album takes music from the classical tradition and the Taraf de Haidouks kind of reclaim that music and give it their own unique spin on it.

Let's listen to music by Bartok. This is music from his Romanian Dances written for violin and piano played by English violinist Daniel Hope.

This is music Bartok wrote, inspired by folk songs and folk tunes he heard while traveling the Romanian countryside. Bartok traveled the countryside of Europe collecting folk music material. So, some of his pieces like Romanian Dances were directly inspired by this music.

As wonderful as the Bartok Romanian Dance is it has a real formality, drama, and even heaviness to it. The music just gets lightened up and transformed when the Taraf musicians take it on.

We hear the music going back to its roots. It's borrowing across the decades, but also crisscrossing cultures.

Maskarada is a really exciting experiment. I think it's one of those albums that the classical audience is going to pick up and maybe put right back down, but the people who already know Taraf are really going to dig this album. But, I think the real importance in this album really does lie with classical fans and musicians. I think they're going to sit back and say "oh, that's what gypsy sounds are supposed to sound like." So all in all, a really interesting album that's definitely worth checking out.
