We were looking for a Middle Eastern country where a volcano erupted this weekend. The BBC's Muhammed Suddam is monitoring the story:
The volcano erupted on the island of Jabal al Tair west of the city of Al Hudaydah. This city is located on the Red Sea and it is about 220 km west of the capital, Sanaa.
Muhammed Suddam reports that about 50 soldiers at a small military base on Jabal al-Tair were evacuated before the eruption. At least 4 soldiers were killed, and 4 others are missing. The Yemeni coastguard requested the help of nearby NATO ships in the search and rescue operation.
A Canadian Navy frigate that was sailing for the Suez Canal was one of the first to arrive on the scene. A spokesman on board described the volcano....as a "giant light show." He said the "whole island was aglow with lava and magma as it poured down into the sea."
It's believed that several earthquakes triggered the eruption. So far, the volcano has not disrupted nearby ship traffic. Three-million barrels of oil pass by Yemen every day at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
