Today's Geo Quiz has two answers. Each of them is a country that borders 14 other countries. The World's David Leveille looked it up in the newly published Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World.
You can check it in any good atlas..the answer's are:
Russia and China. You could answer a lot of geoquizzes by perusing the new Times Atlas Of the World.
China's Great Wall
You'll see that Canada has the longest coastline of any country. And the Pacific Ocean is larger than all the continents' land areas combined. There's nothing new about any of this. On the other hand, there's plenty new in the 12th edition of the Times Atlas. Mick Ashworth is the editor in chief. He says maps published just 4 years ago are out of date when it comes to one of China's major rivers:
Ashworth: "The Yellow River where it flows into the sea in northeastern china has changed its shape considerably and we believe that's as a result of extraction of water to support a the burgeaning population, we've seen discernible changes int eh shape of the coastline as a result of the pattern sometimes it doesn't even reach the sea because of a drying climate and extraction of water."
Shrinking Aral Sea
|
The Aral Sea in Central Asia is another fast changing landscape. It's been shrinking since the 1960's. Ashworth says future maps will have to document climate change:
Ashworth: "We're looking at settlements in northwestern alaska which is threatened because of the pack ice not being as solid as it used to be and its now exposed to storms and coastal erosion the settlement there is under threat , and even whole Pacific nations are under threat some of these countries are only 2-3-4 meters above sea level at the highest point."
Those Pacific nations include the Marshall Islands, Tokelau, and tiny Tuvalu. Geographers says Tuvalu is already feeling the effects of sea levels rising and may one day be wiped from the atlas completely. Ashworth says keeping on top of those kinds of changes is what keeps cartographers busy.
