Ten years ago today, Pakistani vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan passed away. He was a Qawalli singer. Islamic Sufis sing qawalli music as a way to get closer to the divine.

It's hard to top Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's soaring and commanding voice. There have been a number of remixes of his music. The latest comes from London, a reggae-dub treatment. That may seem odd. Not at all to its producer.

My name is Daniel Gaudi, but I just go by my surname Gaudi. I'm a music producer and solo artist, based in London, born in Italy 44 years ago. I have eleven albums so far, all in reggae dub music and world music together. My latest one is "Gaudi and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan: Dub Qawalli."

Two years ago I had the opportunity to work with the Pakistani label Rehmat Gramaphone, the original label for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. They gave me access to the back catalog in order for me to create a new form of music, mixing my reggae and Sufi Qawalli music.

They sent me the original studio reel from Pakistan, beautiful material, all separate all the vocals, the tabla, the sarangui, the tampura, beautiful, beautiful things, but very very difficult to recreate it in a new form. Because I knew from day one that anything I do wouldn't be as beautiful as the original.

I didn't want to modify any syllable of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Not even time stretching to put it in a new tempo. I wanted to keep it as it was.

Qawalli music is one message only: peace and love. And that's the same message reggae music is based on: peace and love. And I found even musically some similar pattern, like the tabla for example, they were working in an offbeat movement, and the reggae, as you know, is all offbeat.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan he was an extremely open minded musician. But, I really can't say if he would like what I did. But I'm regularly in touch with his wife and the record company Rehemat Gramophone, and if they accepted it and they thought that we can release this material, I think if he was alive, probably he would say that I did a good job.
