Latin American School of Medicine

July 25, 2007 | permalink |

Our Geo Quiz today put you on the trail of some of the Newest American doctors.

We wanted you to name a foreign city where 8 Americans have just graduated from medical school. The answer is Havana, Cuba.

That's right, Havana. Most Americans are banned from travelling to Cuba because of the long standing US trade embargo. The State Department allows the medical school exchange, saying it encourages contact between ordinary Cubans and Americans.

Cuba's communist government covers all expenses for the American students attending the Latin American School of Medicine. The program urges graduates to go back to their communities to provide health care to undeserved people. The irony is not lost on critics of Cuba's health care system. But one of the recent American graduates says attending medical school in Cuba will make her a better doctor. We reached Wing Wu earlier today on her cell phone.
