Global Hit archive

For today's Global Hit we sail off the coast of West Africa... to Cape Verde. That country is made up of ten main islands, surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. According to a singer named Lura, each Cape Verdean island has its own sound. Lura showcases several Cape Verdean musical styles on her latest CD.

It's called "M'Bem Di Fora". That means "I've Come From Far Away."

Lura does come from far away, she was born in Portugal. Her parents were immigrants from Cape Verde, though. And their daughter has made the reverse journey to find her musical roots.

Lura's CD shows how varied Cape Verdean music is. It can be mellow, like the songs of that other Cape Verdean diva, Cesaria Evora. Lura was once a back-up singer for her. But these days Lura likes to shake things up with her own songs.
