US businesses are phasing out their older, pollution generating technologies, in favor of greener, cleaner factories and vehicles. But some of their retired coal fired plants and belching buses are getting a second life. They are turning up in developing countries with less stringent emission standards. Anchor Lisa Mullins gets the story from Boston Globe report Beth Daley.

There's an effort afoot to preserve the diversity of the world's crops by collecting seeds. Those seeds will go into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault now being built in Norway, above the Arctic Circle. The Beijing Olympics are a year away. And today, the city government launched an ambitious experiment to see whether controlling car use will help to unclog Beijing's streets and do something about its notoriously polluted air. For the next four days, private vehicles will be allowed on the roads of Beijing only on alternate days, depending on whether their license plates end in an even or odd number. A US Coastguard ship is sailing for the Arctic on a mission to map the sea floor. The US is hoping to document its claim to the region. Russia, Denmark, Canada and Norway are also contenders for influence to the area, which is rich in oil and gas resources. The World's Jason Margolis reports on protests at London's Heathrow Airport over plans for a new runway. Demonstrators say the runway would mean more air traffic and more greenhouse gases contributing to global warming.

The World's Gerry Hadden reports on a symbolic expedition today to plant a Russian flag on the ocean floor at the North Pole. Russia wants to advance its claims to much of the polar region, which is thought to be rich in oil deposits.

Anchor Aaron Schachter speaks with British endurance swimmer Lewis Gordon Pugh. Yesterday Pugh became the first person to swim at the geographic North Pole. He braved arctic temperatures for nearly 19 minutes as part of a campaign to raise awareness about climate change.
