If you like enchiladas con mole, give thanks to Mexico’s convent kitchens

Barbara Sibley is the chef and owner of La Palapa Cocina Mexicana in New York, but she was born and raised in Mexico. Her parents were expatriate Americans who fell in love with Mexico and decided to stay. At college, Sibley studied anthropology. And maybe that's why she's so interested in the roots of modern Mexican cuisine, and especially the role played by Mexican convents in creating that cuisine.

Along with gaining the right to vote and the responsibility of serving on a jury, some studies show new citizens make clear economic gains as well. But not everyone buys it. Naturalization rates in the US are extremely low. Of the more than 8 million people with a US green card, less than 40 percent will go on to naturalize. That's nearly a third of the naturalization rate in our neighbor to the north, Canada.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is pushing immigration as one solution to Detroit's economic woes. He's asked the Obama Administration to designate 50,000 visas to attract skilled immigrants and entrepreneurs to the bankrupt city during the next five years. But Detroit's existing immigrant communities insist they be included in the economic strategy to bring Detroit back.
