Millions of Africans were separated from their families and homes by slavery, but some of their familiar foods came with them.

For many Americans, Christopher Columbus is a hero.
But in recent years, educators, politicians and scholars have argued that students should be made aware of the uglier truths that followed his arrival in the Americas.

The first American Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virgina on May 10, 1908. It was inspired by the British version of the day and imported by social activist Julia Ward Howe to honor moms after the Civil War.

Veterans Day in the U.S. honors all those who’ve done military service. In other countries, the day is set aside to remember the Armistice that ended World War One. The World’s Katy Clark has a global wrap-up of Veterans Day celebrations.
