At least 7 children and 1 adult were killed Thursday when a freight train crashed into their school bus. About 45 people were reported to be injured.

At least eight children have died after a cargo train in Argentina crashed into a bus filled with school-children.

The accident near the small town of Zanjitas involved a bus that was taking more than 40 children to a religious retreat.

"The truth is, the children were in a terrible state of shock. The first thing we tried to do was calm them down and transfer them to the hospital," Zanjitas mayor Jorge Antunez said.

Story continues beneath video.

6 children, age 10 to 12 and one adult died at the scene and another child died at the hospital.

About 45 people were reported to be injured.

Train crashes are common in Argentina, though most happen near the nation's capital of Buenos Aires, which is a 10 hour drive to the east.
