Mexican authorities conducted a massive, multi-day search of beaches and open water near Los Cabos after boaters reported pulling packages of marijuana out of the water.

Officials in Mexico have seized more than two tons of marijuana found floating off the coast of tourist hotspot Los Cabos.

Mexican Marines spent two days scouring the ocean and found 200 packages of marijuana floating about 25 miles offshore from the city in the normally peaceful state of Southern Baja California.

Law enforcement authorities are trying to link the abandoned marijuana to the drug cartels that have been active throughout Mexico. So far, drug-related violence has killed more than 45,000 people since Mexican President Felipe Calderón turned up the pressure on the drug cartels in 1996.
